STARTER
The Aero Safety Starter is provided as standard equipment on the Aeronca 1946 Chief. It is hand operated
from the left side of the pilot’s seat by means of a lever and cable assembly. A pull of approximately 25
pounds is required to actuate the starter mechanism.

The starter lever is mounted on a bracket welded to the fuselage frame and the cable extends from the handle
along the left side of the fuselage through three pulleys and a firewall fairlead. The starter mechanism at
the propeller hub is faired in by recessing in the nose cowling and large propeller hub spinner.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE OF MECHANICAL STARTER

            STARTING ENGINE WHEN COLD
With the switch off, give the engine two full “shots of prime”, then using the starter lever, pull the prop
through once. Jockey the prop up to compression which will put the blade approximately in a horizontal
position. Crack the throttle slightly, turn the switch to #1 mag and make one full pull through on the starter
lever. Should engine fail to immediately start, turn switch off and jockey prop to compression. Then again
turn switch to #1 mag and pull through.

            STARTING ENGINE WHEN HOT

If you stop engine and anticipate re-starting it within a short period of time, do not open your throttle after
cutting the switch. When engine is hot with the ignition off, do not pull prop through but jockey only to
compression. Then, cracking throttle, turn switch to #1 mag and pull starter lever one full stroke.

Do not jerk lever. A steady pull through compression is sufficient.

            MAINTENANCE
Do not attempt to dismantle starter mechanism. Contact your nearest dealer or distributor for service.
