Univair holds STC SA45RM for the conversion of the PA-22 to conventional landing gear configuration. Our kits and parts have become popular items for the general aviation enthusiast and aircraft restorer.
The conversion is not a difficult project. The basic steps involved in making the conversion are as follows: New forward gear fittings are welded on the first station aft of the firewall. The new gears are used for fitting alignment. The new Taildragger gear rear leg utilizes the original forward PA-22 frame fittings and the main leg of the Taildragger gear uses the newly installed fittings. The hydrasorb attachments remain the same. "U" channels and fabric reworking are required on the belly to accommodate the gears being moved forward. A bracket is welded on the tailpost for the tailwheel assembly. New rudder pedals and toe brakes need to be installed. Rudder control cables need some reworking. The bottom cowl needs to be modified or replaced with a PA-20 type cowl which Univair can provide.

Landing Gear Conversion Kit
2200 Series Kits contain materials required for converting a Piper PA-22-108, 135, 150 or 160 hp aircraft to the Taildragger configuration.
The 2200 Series Conversion Kits provide you with a choice of wheels and brakes. You can use the L1012-40 and -41 landing gears which allow you to use your present PA-22 wheels and brakes, or the heavy duty Cleveland wheels and brakes are also available.
A popular kit with most aircraft owners has been our L2200-01 (PA-22 wheels and brakes) equipped with options L4 and L7 (dual brakes and the Scott 3200-style tailwheel).
The Basic Conversion Kit includes FAA-PMA approved conventional "wide gears," which are fabricated from AISI 4130N tubular steel and welded in our precision jigs. Pre-cut frame panels fabricated from 2024 T3 and 5052 H34 aluminum alloy are also included. Various types of nuts and bolts required for installation are included.

All parts, hardware, manufacturer’s packaging, installation instructions, etc. included in the kit must be included in the return. Kits returned to Univair with missing parts will be shipped back to the customer at customer’s expense.
